Monrovia — Liberia national team coach Mohammed Adil Erradi has named a 24-man squad for the Lone Star’s back-to-back 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Rwanda and Mali, with Sylvanus Nimely, Mohammed Kamara and Mohammed Sangare returning to the national team.
Liberia will open its qualifying campaign against Rwanda on Sept. 25 before hosting Mali on Sept. 29 at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville. Kickoff for the Mali match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Nimely returns to the Lone Star squad for the first time in nearly five years. The Kokand forward has been in strong form in Uzbekistan, scoring three goals and providing two assists in his last five league matches.
He has recorded 12 goal contributions in 21 games across all competitions this season, with six goals and six assists.
Sangare also returns after missing Liberia’s last five matches since October. The midfielder has not played a competitive match since May and, despite recently joining Tunisian club ES Sahel, has yet to make a matchday squad for the club.
Goalkeeper Tommy Songo is another notable returnee. He has been recalled for the first time since November. Songo has made 20 appearances for Liberia, keeping four clean sheets and conceding 24 goals.
Rapid București forward Mohammed Kamara has also been recalled. The 28-year-old has one goal in four appearances for Liberia and last played for the national team against Malawi in 2023. He has been away from the squad since then for what he described as personal reasons.
Erradi has also handed Franklin Nyenetue his first Liberia call-up.
Nyenetue, 25, was born in Liberia but moved to Norway at age 3. He came through Tangmoen IL before playing for clubs including Rosenborg BK and Sandefjord. He has made 91 appearances in Norway’s top division and currently plays for second-tier club Ranheim IL.
The government and the Liberia Football Association have made qualification for the 2027 AFCON a priority.
At a fundraising dinner Friday, Youth and Sports Minister Atty. Cornelia Kruah announced an increase in the Lone Star’s appearance fee and win bonus from $1,000 to $2,500 each.
Under the new structure, each player will receive $2,500 for being called up to the national team and an additional $2,500 when Liberia wins a match, giving players a potential $5,000 for a winning game.
