District #3 Representative Sumo K. Mulbah has pledged his support for the completion and full operationalization of the Wood Camp Community Center, praising Mercy Corps Liberia for its development efforts to strengthen community participation and youth empowerment.
Speaking during a gathering with community elders, residents, youth leaders, and members of the District Council, Representative Mulbah described the project as a crucial investment in local development. He emphasized its role in creating opportunities for young people and fostering stronger community engagement.
The community center, which is nearing completion, is being implemented by Mercy Corps Liberia under its Urban Fabric Initiative (UFI) with funding from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD). Once fully operational, the facility is expected to accommodate approximately 300 people and will feature an event hall, separate restroom facilities for men, women, and persons with disabilities, an administrative office, a borehole, disability-friendly access, and an adjoining football field for recreational activities.
Mulbah highlighted that the center will provide residents with a shared space for public meetings, social activities, training programs, and local governance initiatives. Although the project was not directly funded or undertaken by his office, the lawmaker promised to assist in its completion by supplying essential furniture, seating, and equipment required to make the facility fully functional.
He urged residents to take direct ownership of the center, cautioning that its long-term viability will depend on proper management, maintenance, and collective responsibility. Specifically, he called for routine cleaning, consistent restroom upkeep, and the responsible management of the water system. Mulbah reiterated that community development should not rely solely on government intervention, stressing that citizens, local leaders, and international partners must collaborate to address pressing local needs.
Beyond the Wood Camp project, the District #3 lawmaker outlined broader development priorities for his constituency, focusing on education, healthcare, infrastructure, and community governance. Chief among these is the construction of a district college designed to expand access to higher education and reduce the travel and financial burdens on families sending students outside the district. Mulbah noted that the proposed college would serve students from across District #3 and surrounding areas while stimulating local commerce. Furthermore, he identified the need for a modern hospital to complement the proposed educational facility and strengthen healthcare access.
Touching on student welfare, Mulbah referenced his previous interventions following student-led protests over educational grievances, noting that his office engaged the leadership of the House of Representatives to ensure those concerns were formally addressed.
To reinforce grassroots democracy, Mulbah announced plans to conduct community leadership elections across three local areas this December to enhance representation and governance accountability. He cautioned local leaders against allowing political disputes or personal rivalries to stall development, emphasizing that community leadership must remain rooted in service, cooperation, and the public interest.
On infrastructure, the lawmaker expressed optimism regarding ongoing discussions to rehabilitate key local transit routes, including Webline Road, Coconut Factory Road, and Morrison Farm Road. Upgrading these corridors, he noted, is critical to improving transportation, accessibility, and economic activity throughout the district.
Attending residents, elders, and council members welcomed the news of the center’s impending completion and encouraged the lawmaker to swiftly fulfill his commitments. As construction on the Wood Camp Community Center draws to a close, local focus is turning toward acquiring remaining supplies, establishing operational management frameworks, and securing long-term maintenance arrangements for the community facility.
