The Liberian Senate has concluded a one-day retreat to consolidate national priorities into an actionable legislative agenda for the Third Segment of the Third Session of the 55th Legislature, with discussions covering county development, education, governance, justice and economic and fiscal matters.

The retreat, held in the Senate Chambers at the Capitol in Monrovia, brought senators together to review pressing national issues, assess pending legislative business and identify priority actions for the remainder of the session.

Senate President Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence said the discussions would inform a consolidated legislative agenda to guide the Senate’s work.

“As part of the Senate’s reform agenda and its desire to continue working in the interest of the Liberian people, the expected outcomes from these discussions will produce a Consolidated Legislative Agenda Documented for action, outlining priority actions for the Third Segment of the Third Session, 55th Legislature,” Karnga-Lawrence said.

County development and decentralization featured prominently, with senators examining Social Development Funds, ArcelorMittal Liberia’s Social Development Plan, the role of County Councils, farm-to-market roads and county budgets. The discussions focused on local development priorities and the management of resources intended to benefit communities.

On education and human capital development, senators discussed disparities among county universities, the closure of the University of Liberia, the status of volunteer teachers and the renovation of schools across the country.

Governance and justice deliberations addressed the condition of prison facilities, tenure-related issues at the Governance Commission and the conduct of confirmation hearings.

Economic and fiscal matters also formed part of the agenda. Senators considered petroleum pricing and the role of the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company, legislative responsibilities in national budget appropriations, taxation, Medtek, the Cargo Tracking Note and updates on the Senate’s budget.

The discussions also covered bills pending before various committees, underscoring the need to advance legislative business and address outstanding proposals.

Another issue was the standardization and alignment of Senate employees’ salaries with compensation for comparable positions within the Executive Branch.

The retreat forms part of the Senate’s efforts to strengthen internal operations, improve oversight and establish a coordinated approach to national priorities.

The proposed consolidated legislative agenda is expected to guide senators in organizing and advancing actions across the identified areas during the remainder of the current session.

However, the retreat’s conclusions do not automatically translate into policy or law. The issues identified will require further deliberation and, where necessary, legislative approval or administrative action before implementation.
