CONGO TOWN, Liberia, November 4, 2026 – Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung is expected to join five other foreign leaders in Shanghai, China, for the opening of the ninth China International Import Expo (CIIE), scheduled for November 5–10, 2026.

According to a statement issued by the Chinese Embassy in Liberia, Koung will attend the international trade exhibition upon invitation, alongside Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema and Austrian Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker.

Other invited dignitaries include Cuban Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment Oscar Pérez-Oliva Fraga; Slovak Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Denisa Sakova; and Georgian Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili.

The leaders are expected to attend the expo’s opening ceremony and related activities, bringing together government officials, international organizations, business executives and investors from across the world.

The ninth edition of the CIIE will be held under the theme, “New Era, Shared Future,” with an emphasis on expanding international trade, attracting investment, strengthening business partnerships and promoting economic cooperation.

The exhibition provides participating countries with a platform to showcase their products and services, connect with potential investors and establish commercial partnerships with Chinese businesses and other international companies.

For Liberia, Koung’s participation presents an opportunity to explore potential trade and investment partnerships, particularly in agriculture, mining, infrastructure, manufacturing and other productive sectors of the economy.

The country could also use the platform to promote locally produced commodities and identify opportunities for expanding Liberian exports into the Chinese market.

Established in 2018 following an initiative announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping in May 2017, the CIIE is recognized as the world’s first national-level exhibition dedicated specifically to imports.

Held annually in Shanghai, the expo is designed to expand access to China’s domestic market for foreign businesses while strengthening international trade relations and promoting economic globalization.

The event is jointly organized by China’s Ministry of Commerce and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government.

Since its establishment, the CIIE has developed into an international business platform connecting governments, exporters, investors and private-sector institutions to explore market access, investment opportunities and commercial partnerships.

For developing economies such as Liberia, the exhibition offers an avenue to attract foreign investment, promote agricultural and other locally produced goods, and explore partnerships capable of supporting domestic production, export growth and economic diversification.
