Gender Policy Development- Environmental Protection Agency of Liberia Gender Policy Terms of Reference
Introduction/Background
Liberia, as a country within the West African region, is endowed with an array of natural resources, including extensive forests, a variety of minerals, and wildlife. However, the country is currently dealing with major environmental security issues linked to climate change, such as flooding, droughts, and heat waves. These issues put a strain on the country’s economy and natural resources. Locals that heavily depend on agriculture, forestry, livestock, and handicrafts as sources of livelihood are impacted adversely. It is evidence that everyone is vulnerable to the risk posed by climate change, regardless of their location and their livelihood activities and strategies.
Women, children, the elderly, and the disabled are groups of people mostly threatened and are faced with higher risks from the impact of climate change, particularly those in poverty-stricken communities. Despite their high level of vulnerability, they are often left out in terms of climate change-related decision-making processes like planning, policy development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
