By Comfort M. Johnson

MONROVIA Oct 2 (LINA) – The Government of Liberia through its Joint Security arm, has warned Liberians against acts of electoral violence assuring the public that it will prosecute those who are responsible for such acts.

The government condemned in the strongest terms, the recent violence which occurred on Friday September 29, 2023, in Foya Lofa County leading to the death of two persons, and wounding of several others.

Justice Minister Frank Musa Dean confirmed Monday at a press conference in Monrovia that the violence in Lofa County was a result of clashes between individuals identified as supporters of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and that of the Unity Party (UP).

The Joint Security called on Liberians to join them in denouncing these evil and wicked acts which according to them, are being perpetrated by criminal-minded individuals.

Referring to the Lofa incident, Cllr. Dean noted that “those found culpable shall face the full weight of the law,” adding, people must be made to understand that when they break the law, they will be held accountable.

Meanwhile, the Joint Security head also disclosed that following a comprehensive review of its election security plans, the body has commenced the deployment of law enforcement officers throughout all the counties of Liberia, ahead of the Tuesday October 10, 2023, elections.

Cllr. Dean said the officers being deployed, led by the Liberia National Police, are in addition to those already stationed in the Counties.

“We wish to assure everyone of adequate security”, he said, “we provided security during the voter’s registration exercise.”

The Attorney General also noted that they are providing security to presidential candidates and to campaign rallies to ensure that candidates campaign freely before the election day.

According to him, the Joint Security shall guarantee the security and safety of members of the National Elections Commission election workers, voters, precincts, election material and the public.
