Recent reports that some members of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Liberia allegedly received bribes of $15,000 each to orchestrate the removal of Speaker J. Fonati Koffa raise serious legal and ethical concerns. This alleged misconduct took place while both Speaker Koffa and President Joseph N. Boakai were in Rome, Italy, working on behalf of the Liberian people to promote the nation’s interests.

The Constitutional Right to Remove Leaders Must Be Exercised Legally
While lawmakers have the constitutional authority to remove their leaders through lawful processes, the removal of the Speaker must follow the rule of law, not be influenced by financial incentives. The Constitution of Liberia enshrines the principles of fair governance, emphasizing that any removal of elected officials should be based on established legal grounds, ensuring due process and accountability. When bribes are used to manipulate leadership changes, it violates these constitutional principles and threatens to destabilize Liberia’s democracy.

If the investigation confirms wrongdoing, the U.S. government should consider imposing targeted sanctions on those involved to reinforce the message that corruption will not be tolerated.
