BUCHANAN, Grand Bassa − Grand Bassa paid host to a joint delegation of government officials and Korean investors on an assessment visit to Buchanan’s Special Economic Zone.
Headed by Agriculture Minister Alexander Nuetah, the delegation’s visit on August 1 followed the launch of the Special Agro-Processing Zone.
Representatives of the National Investment Commission, the Special Economic Zone Authority, and the Ministry of Agriculture were among the representatives of the government. At the same time, the Honorary Ambassador of Foreign Investment Promotion of South Korea, Tong Soo Chung, headed the team of investors on the one-day visit.
During a courtesy call to the office of Grand Bassa’s Superintendent Julia K. Bono before the official tour, Minister Nuetah informed the county administration that the Korean investors’ presence was a result of President Joseph Nyumah Boakai’s visit to South Korea in June this year. At that conference, Nuetah said Boakai highlighted Liberia’s agricultural potential.
Nuetah outlined the benefits of the investment package for Grand Bassa and the country, including constructing a cassava processing factory and facilities to engage in palm oil production, vegetable production, and crawfish trading.
In response, Superintendent Bono said, “This investment visit means a lot to us, especially the job creation, cassava processing, and palm oil components since these things are grown here in our county.”

Grand Bassa is already home to a seaport and major fishing communities, and it is one of the pathways to southeastern Liberia.
The visitors toured the Port of Buchanan and the Special Economic Zone, near ArcelorMittal’s Buchanan facility. Accompanying the tour were Buchanan’s Mayor George B. Gaybueh and County Development Officer Moses G. Henry.
The delegation also interacted with the port’s manager, Jonathan L. Kaipay, the former Grand Bassa senator who informed the delegation that he was a key sponsor of the Economic Free Zone Act while he served at the Senate between 2015 and 2023.
