The Agricultural and Industrial Training Bureau (AITB) has announced a new initiative to standardize the curricula of agricultural and vocational training institutions in Liberia.
This initiative aims to bring these educational programs in line with regional standards in West Africa and boost the confidence in the abilities of graduates.
The Director General of the AITB, Abraham Billy, highlighted the importance of creating a unified approach to technical and vocational education to ensure consistency and quality.
“While many institutions have established their own guidelines over the years, there is now a pressing need to harmonize these efforts to ensure consistency and quality,” Billy stated.
As the secretariat of the National Technical and Vocational Education and Training (T-VET) Council, the AITB plans to convene council members to discuss advancing the sector, including the potential introduction of a national examination for vocational institution graduates.
“The national examination will serve as a benchmark to evaluate the competency of graduates and further enhance the credibility of vocational education in Liberia,” Billy noted.
Billy emphasized that the national examination would serve as a benchmark to assess graduates’ competency and enhance vocational education’s credibility in Liberia.
In addition to curriculum reforms, the AITB is preparing to launch a pilot program involving at least 200 students from agricultural and vocational training institutions nationwide to evaluate the effectiveness of the new standardized guidelines.
As a government entity dedicated to developing skilled human resources for the agricultural and industrial sectors, the AITB plays a crucial role in equipping Liberians with the necessary technical skills for national development.
This initiative reflects Liberia’s commitment to enhancing its educational system to meet global standards and ensure graduates are well-equipped to contribute to national and regional progress.
The AITB was established in 1981 by Decree No. 56 of the People’s Redemption Council to serve as the technical and administrative secretariat of the National Council for Vocational/Technical Education and Training. Its primary objective is to address Liberia’s manpower needs and contribute to the country’s economic and social development by providing various technical and vocational skills. The institution was tasked with regulating vocational/technical education and training according to Liberia’s workforce requirements.
AITB’s core mandates include developing a TVET curriculum, monitoring TVET institutions for compliance, accrediting TVET institutions, conducting trade testing, and training TVET teachers. However, following the civil war and the transition to democratic governance, the institution has been inactive and labeled as “moribund” during Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s government.
