Ambassador Alioune Kebe, a former Senegalese professional footballer and head of a Liberian sports academy, has responded to allegations against him, expressing disappointment over personal attacks.

“It’s disheartening when people twist narratives, especially when I’ve invested so much into this cause. I once gave a man $500 to help him find a place for his family. A few weeks later, he went online to criticize me publicly. It’s upsetting, but I won’t let it stop me,” Kebe said.

The academy leader emphasized his passion for creating a family-like atmosphere within the organization. “For me, this is more than work; it’s a calling. I see the coaches and players as family. We eat together, train together, and whatever I have, I share with them,” he shared.

Despite operating without formal pay, Kebe continues to pour his resources into the academy, describing it as a labor of love. “I don’t get paid for this. Everything I have, I share. It’s not about money; it’s about making a difference,” he added.

Kebe addressed recent defamatory articles, revealing plans to take legal action. “I’ve consulted my lawyer and reported this to the police. At first, I wanted to let it go, but it’s important to protect my image. As a public figure, my reputation matters. For nearly 20 years, my work has been transparent, and anyone can verify my contributions,” he said.

Speaking about his decision to invest in Liberia, he explained: “I’m Liberian, and I love this country. Compared to Senegal, sports here aren’t as developed. I saw the potential and thought, ‘Let’s do something.’ That’s what drives me and the team.”

Recently, allegations surfaced accusing Kebe, who also serves as Liberia’s Sports Ambassador, of exploiting workers and showing disdain toward Liberians. Among his accusers is Abraham Massalay, a former assistant coach at the academy, who alleged that Kebe referred to all Liberians as “imbéciles,” a French insult implying stupidity.

“This man openly disrespected Liberians, even in front of his Senegalese associates. It’s unacceptable for someone who represents our country,” said Massalay, a seasoned footballer from Lofa County.

Massalay further claimed he was subjected to unpaid wages and mistreatment. “I was never paid for my work. Instead, Kebe focused on bringing in Senegalese nationals while neglecting Liberians,” he said.

“We need to entrust sports development to Liberians with passion, ideas, and integrity. Foreign nationals with no loyalty to our country should not exploit us,” Massalay argued.

In contrast, Jerry Isaiah Gonowolo, a coach at the academy, defended Kebe against claims of misconduct, emphasizing his collaborative leadership style. “He’s a calm and respectful gentleman. Even when there are misunderstandings, he discusses them professionally,” Gonowolo stated.

The coach highlighted the academy’s structured training and its focus on grooming players holistically, grouping them by age and position while incorporating drills and exercises tailored to their development.

Despite criticism and limited resources, Kebe remains focused on his mission to develop Liberia’s sports infrastructure. Operating without a formal budget or external financial support, Kebe spends over $3,000 monthly from his own funds to sustain the academy.

“We’ve already secured land, and construction of a football field and fitness center will begin next month. By January or February, we hope to have one or two players invited to Europe for opportunities,” Kebe revealed.

He also highlighted the academy’s comprehensive support for players, addressing challenges like food insecurity and family issues.

Kebe concluded with a call for unity and collective growth: “Not everyone will support you, but we need to work together for the greater good. This isn’t about me; it’s about the future of sports in Liberia.”

Amid the controversy, Kebe remains committed to nurturing young talent and creating opportunities for Liberia’s athletes, striving to leave a lasting legacy in the nation’s sports development.
