—Lawmakers finally settle on venue

Despite earlier reports that members of the 55th Legislature were in search of an alternative venue for President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to deliver his State of the Nation’s Address, that body has confirmed that the fire ravaged Capitol Building will now serve as the venue for the Monday, January 27, 2025 event.

This decision was announced by the 55th Legislature in the wake of the December 18, 2024 “arson attack” on the William R. Tolbert Joint Chamber which was originally the venue for the annual message.

The State of Nation Address is in keeping with Article 58 of the 1986 Liberian Constitution which states: “The President shall, on the fourth working Monday in January of each year, present the administration’s legislative programs for the ensuing session, and shall once a year report to the Legislature on the state of the Republic.  In presenting the economic condition of the Republic the report shall cover expenditure as well as income.”

The decision to host the SONA on the grounds of the Capitol Building comes despite initial considerations for an alternative location due to the chamber renovations.

Security measures have been reinforced for the event, with restricted access and live broadcasts planned for broader public engagement. Media coverage at the venue will require prior approval and access passes.

The joint release further warned those without official invitations or access passes including staffers of the Legislature to avoid the premises of the Capitol on the day of the SONA.

The general public is also assured that the President’s annual message will be live on various media platforms, mainly radios, televisions, as well as social media to allow citizens to see and listen to the message while at home or various places of work .

The joint Legislative release at the same time cautioned that only media institutions duly approved and issued access passes will be allowed to provide coverage for the upcoming national event.

“The Legislature remains committed and is fully prepared to receive H.E President Joseph N. Boakai Sr, on Monday 27 January for the sole purpose of delivering his 2nd Annual message,” the release noted.

In another Legislative development, the Liberian Senate has cited the Minister of Public Works, Roland Giddings, to appear before the Senate on Thursday, January 23, 2025 to provide information on the Ministry’s work program for fiscal year 2025, addressing the fifteen counties.

The Senate took the decision recently following a recommendation from its Chairman on Public Works and Rural Development, Grand Kru County Senator Albert Tugbe Chie. The Public Works Minister will appear before the Senate Committee of a Whole.

At the same time, the Senate has also endorsed a recommendation from Montserrado County Senator, Saah H. Joseph to invite the Director of the Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS), to appear before a Senate committee of a whole on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, to provide update on funding allotted by the Legislature in the 2024 budget for fire trucks.

Senator Joseph in his request to Plenary, asserted that there has been poor response from the Liberia Fire Service in the fight against fire incidents in Montserrado County as well as other counties across the Country.
