Bomi Representative Donates to Fire Victims in Dewien District

JENNEH, Bomi – Rep. Sam Jallah has donated materials to victims of a seven-bedroom house destroyed by fire in Jenneh #3, Dewien District, Bomi. The fire rendered seven families homeless.

Ansu Washington presented seven mattresses, seven bags of rice, seven gallons of vegetable oil, and L$3,500 (US$18) on behalf of the representative from Bomi’s third district.

“Rep. Sam Jallah told me to present these little items as an initial contribution to you and that he is saddened after hearing about your unfortunate situation. He pledges to also engage the National Disaster Management Agency to come and help you,” Washington said.

The Liberia National Fire Service has not officially established the cause of the fire. However, residents reported that the fire may have started when one of the tenants lit up a coal pot to heat her room and left it to attend to other activities.

One resident, Jenneh Johnson, said she is now seeking refuge at the district commissioner’s compound. While there was no human casualty, Johnson said she lost all her belongings and cash in the fire.

Bendu Sambola, who is physically challenged, told The Bush Chicken that it was negligent on the part of one of the house occupants to light her coal pot indoors.

While commending their district lawmaker for the swift intervention, she also called on the government to aid the victims: “We would like to tell Rep. Sam P. Jallah thank you for at least coming to help us while we are in need. Now that he has played his part, we want the government to help us. We really need somewhere to be right now. At least the government can help us with some money to construct something to stay in.”
