MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Capitol Building, which houses the Legislature, was engulfed in flames early Wednesday morning, December 18, 2024. The cause of the fire remains unclear, but the incident comes on the heels of a heated protest against the removal of Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa.

Tuesday’s protest led to the arrest of several individuals, including Sekou Kalasco Damaro, a former aide to ex-President George Weah, further escalating political tensions in the country. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage.

Eyewitnesses reported thick smoke rising from the Capitol Building, sparking panic and widespread speculation among onlookers. The Liberia National Fire Service promptly responded to the scene, but it remains unclear whether the fire has been fully extinguished.

This incident marks a critical moment for Liberia, as the Legislature struggles with internal divisions and public discontent. The fire adds another layer of uncertainty, with calls for an immediate and thorough investigation into the cause. More details to follow…
