— Says Liberia’s civil conflict did more harm than good
Renowned Liberian entrepreneur and President of the Paynesville Business Association (PABA), Mr. Sheik Yaya Jalloh, has urged Liberians to embrace peace and dialogue over violence, emphasizing that Liberia gained nothing meaningful from its 14 years of civil conflict.
Speaking upon receiving the highest title of honor from the Consortium of Civil Society Organizations, the “Ambassador of Nonviolence and Outstanding Businessman Award 2024,” on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, Mr. Jalloh highlighted the devastating consequences of the civil conflict, which led to the massive destruction of lives and properties.
“Nonviolence isn’t just strategic; it’s a way of life that requires patience, courage, and unwavering faith in the dignity of every human being. As you are aware, we endured 14 years of civil conflict in this country, and we have gained nothing but losses,” he stated.
Mr. Sheik Yaya Jalloh, an entrepreneur, real estate developer, business advocate, and philanthropist, received the “Ambassador of Nonviolence” and “Businessman of the Year 2024” awards. The certificate was bestowed upon him by the Consortium of Civil Society Organizations with the following inscription:
“This Certificate Is Presented To Amb. Sheikh Yaya Jalloh in recognition of your unwavering commitment to the principles of nonviolence, peace, and harmony. We, therefore, confer upon you the highest title of honor: ‘Ambassador of Nonviolence and Outstanding Businessman 2024.’ Given under our hands and seal on this faithful day of January 15, 2025.”
The certificate was signed by Amb. Joseph Bush, Head of Secretariat, and John D. Pangbe Karinal, Executive Chairman.
The Liberian business advocate and philanthropist lamented that the war left Liberia as one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world. However, he inspired Liberians to work collectively for the country’s transformation, emphasizing that it is not too late to bring about meaningful change.
“This nonviolence ambassador award is not just about me, but about every individual who believes in the transformative power of compassion, dialogue, and understanding,” Mr. Jalloh said.
Reflecting on Liberia’s past, the real estate developer noted that Liberia was one of the most desirable countries in the 1970s and 1980s, attracting people from America and other parts of the world because of its peace and prosperity.
“Today, people are leaving Liberia for other countries because they see opportunities elsewhere that are missing here. If we do away with violence, adopt positive attitudes, and change our mindsets, Liberia can become a great nation that everyone will wish to visit and call home,” he concluded.
