Liberia’s premier vocational skills training institution, Booker Washington Institute, begs for assistance.

By Ramsey N. Singbeh, Jr. in Margibi

Margibi, Liberia, December 20, 2024- Following a recent call by the Principal of Booker Washington Institute (BWI), Dr. Nancy T. Freeman, seeking solutions to major challenges at BWI, a 1989 graduate of the Institute, Francis W. Boe, wants alumni in Liberia and abroad to pay attention to the institution by helping to solve some of its challenges.

Mr. Boe says he followed Principal Freeman’s short Whatsapp video and is appealing for assistance.

The BWI Principal recently informed President Boakai that the institution is still beset with many problems that need attention.

“As I told the principal, I saw the short video that she did on WhatsApp, asking everybody to come and contribute, whether as group or individual,l but I took that side where she said even as individuals, we can come and see what we can do for the school,” Mr. Francis W Boe, who is also a U. S.-based alumnus, says.

He notes that there are a lot of well-suited individuals who graduated from the class of 89, naming some of them as Margibi County Senator J. Emmanuel Nuquay, Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah, Finance Minister Augustine K. Ngafuan, who, according to him, he attended university with, including Levi Deman, amongst others. He wants them to come and help BWI.

He made the call recently when he and a Liberian-based alumnus, Sam Tomah, paid a visit to Principal Freeman to have her officially informed about his contributions to the Institute.

Mr. Boe, who once taught electronics and helped enhance the teaching of mathematics and physics, says he served as a sponsor of the 2011 class that built a library annex on campus.

He also points to an ongoing bus stop project on campus that he is involved with, valued at US$ 20,000. He added that he came to ensure that the project goes on speedily before Christmas to add to the beautification of BWI.

Boe says he returned in March 2024 and observed that the teacher lounge on campus was very poor, so he donated a 65-inch TV, installed a DStv system, and a water fountain, among other contributions. Editing by Jonathan Browne
