Reports of damaged rice being dumped on the Liberian market have raised eyebrows at the Ministry of Commerce.
Monrovia, October 30, 2024/Authorities at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) have expressed utmost concern over recent reports suggesting the presence of damaged rice involving some importers.
The ministry, in a statement, said it recognizes the urgency of this matter and has launched a full investigation through our Inspectorate Division to examine these claims, particularly as they relate to certain importers and suppliers.
The Ministry further stated that its inspection teams are conducting rigorous checks to identify and remove any compromised products, and we assure the public that all findings will be promptly and transparently shared.
“Anyone found to be responsible for distributing expired or contaminated goods will face the appropriate punitive measures in keeping law,” the ministry said in its statement.
Meanwhile, the MoCI said it is committed to enforcing the highest consumer protection and safety standards.
“Protecting the health and welfare of the Liberian people is our foremost priority, and we are taking strong measures to enhance the capacity and effectiveness of our inspection and oversight regime. We are dedicated to holding importers, wholesalers, and retailers accountable, ensuring that only safe, high-quality products reach our citizens,” it added.
The Commerce authorities further called on citizens to join in this effort by reporting expired or suspicious products found in the market to our offices or through designated hotlines. “Together, we can maintain a safer, healthier market for all Liberians. The Ministry is unwavering in its commitment to consumer safety and will continue to work tirelessly to safeguard the quality of goods,” the statement concluded.
