Dean of the John & Judy Gay College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at Cuttington University, Felix B. Dordor, has advised freshman students to be studious and prioritize their education.
At an orientation exercise held on Friday, November 1, Dean Dorbor emphasized the importance of setting high academic expectations, utilizing resources effectively, and developing a growth mindset to overcome challenges—urging students to cultivate strong study habits, seek assistance when needed, and actively engage in their learning process.
“I urge you to, first and foremost, set high academic expectations for yourself,” the Dean said. “College is a place for intellectual growth, critical thinking, and self-discovery.
“Take advantage of the vast resources available from your brilliant professors, well-equipped libraries, supportive advisors, and diverse academic programs, challenge yourself to explore new subjects, engage in meaningful discussions, and push the boundaries of your knowledge,” Dean Dordor said.
He also underscored the significance of time management, organization, active learning, and self-discipline as fundamental components of successful studying. The Dean reiterated the importance of creating a study schedule, taking thorough notes, engaging in active learning strategies, and seeking help when required.
“I believe in your potential to excel and strive for excellence in everything you do,” he said. “Take thorough notes during lectures and review them regularly to reinforce your understanding of the materials. Engage in active learning strategies such as summarizing key concepts, teaching others, or participating in group discussions.”
Dean Dordor emphasized that academic expectations and study skills are essential for shaping a successful college experience and laying a foundation for future achievements. He advised students to immerse themselves in the academic community, embrace opportunities for growth, and strive for excellence.
“I therefore have full confidence that each one of you has the potential to reach new heights and make a lasting impact in the world. Embrace this transformative period with enthusiasm, curiosity, and a steadfast commitment to academic excellence,”
Seton Loglar, the Coordinator of the Foreign Service Institute at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, commended Dean Dordor for organizing an orientation for freshman students and encouraged the students to excel in their studies, avoid habits that hinder academic progress, and uphold a commitment to education.
The Freshman Orientation ceremony was attended by Department Chairpersons from the John & Judy College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, covering diverse areas such as English, History, International Relations, Criminal Justice, French, Sociology, Service Learning, and Kpelle.
Freshman students expressed gratitude for the orientation, recognizing its value as they begin their academic journey at the institution.
