FINANCE MINISTER URGES COLLECTIVE EFFORT AS MCC TEAM ARRIVES IN LIBERIA

by Staff Writer

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – A delegation from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) has arrived in Liberia to discuss plans for a new development compact, prompting Finance and Development Planning Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan to call for unity in advancing the nation’s progress.

The visit, led by MCC Managing Director for Africa Jason Small and Program Officer Ilana Shapiro, focuses on preparations for Liberia’s second compact with the U.S. government agency. Key areas of discussion include staff recruitment, feasibility studies, and the establishment of a local MCC office.

During a meeting with the delegation, Minister Ngafuan emphasized the need for Liberians to put aside political differences and work collectively toward national development. He underscored the importance of inclusive progress, stating that initiatives such as the MCC Compact benefit everyone regardless of political affiliation or background.

Reflecting on Liberia’s first compact, Ngafuan noted its significant impact on infrastructure, particularly in expanding access to electricity through the Mount Coffee Hydro Dam and improving water services via the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation. He highlighted how these projects have improved daily life without discrimination, serving as examples of what unity can achieve.

Ngafuan commended both past and present officials for their roles in securing Liberia’s continued partnership with the MCC. He urged stakeholders to prioritize essential services like roads, education, healthcare, and power, arguing that these areas are critical to meeting the expectations of the Liberian people. Development, he stressed, should not be limited to election cycles but should be a continuous effort benefiting citizens year-round.

Meanwhile, Jason Small expressed optimism about Liberia’s commitment to the compact process. He emphasized the MCC’s determination to work closely with the Liberian government to ensure that the second compact addresses critical challenges and delivers long-lasting improvements. Small acknowledged the collaborative efforts that have brought Liberia to this stage and pledged to advance the partnership further.

U.S. Ambassador to Liberia Mark Toner also welcomed the delegation’s mission, describing it as a testament to the enduring relationship between Liberia and the United States. He praised the ongoing efforts to align priorities and strengthen cooperation, noting that the compact represents a meaningful step toward sustainable development.
