Barclayville, Jan 4, 2025 –The Ministry of Gender Ministry Of Gender Children And Social Protection County Coordinator for Grand Kru has expressed gratitude to the government for her appointment, as President Joseph Boakai leads efforts to increase the number of women in local and national positions.
She committed to serving her community with sincerity and integrity in addressing gender issues that negatively impact society.
Regina Walker, a former Representative candidate who ran on the Unity Party ticket in Electoral District #2 Grand Kru County, has emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the statutory operations of the Ministry’s and educating citizens on gender-related issues.
She highlighted the need for citizens to be informed about the procedures for contacting the relevant actors in these matters. By fostering greater understanding and engagement, Walker believes we can better address the challenges posed by gender inequality in our society.
Indeed, the situation in Grand Kru County highlights a significant issue regarding the safety and well-being of vulnerable populations. The increased reports of sexual and gender-based violence, as well as child abuse in gold mining camps, underscore the urgent need for enhanced law enforcement presence and community support systems.
Walker’s emphasis on understanding and community engagements are crucial; to create more effective solutions to these pressing challenges.
She added that by establishing partnerships with NGOs, local leaders, and law enforcement could help in addressing these abuses and ensuring that victims have access to the necessary support and resources, as It’s imperative to prioritize the protection of those at risk and foster an environment where such acts of violence are not tolerated.
Coordinator Regina Walker emphasized the importance of engaging local leaders in meaningful dialogue about the dangers of gender-based violence.
She highlighted that in the past, there was insufficient community engagement regarding the exploitation of young girls, who are often deprived of their education and forced into roles as breadwinners for their families. Walker affirmed her commitment to addressing these critical gender issues during her county tour and awareness campaign, ensuring that such practices are recognized and challenged within the community.
She than indicated that her leadership with work with the county administration in providing vocational training opportunities for women in Grand Kru County in empowering them to enhance their skills to make meaningful contributions to their household and communities. Madam Walker noted with those capacity building training opportunities it will help the women to improve their economic status and foster a sense of independence and self-worth.
Additionally, it can play a significant role in promoting gender equality and encouraging positive relationships within families. It’s important to create an environment where both men and women feel supported and valued, which ultimately benefits the entire community, said Regina.
Over the lack of some key components within the County’s Criminal Justice System, Grand Kru Ministry of Gender Representative is emphasizing the urgent need for the construction of a modern Correction Center and an increase in security personnel, particularly police, in Grand Kru. She asserted that achieving these goals would significantly contribute to the reduction of gender-based crimes.
Earlier, the County Ministry of Gender Representative stated that with logistical support and collaboration from the community, the fight against harmful practices affecting women and children could become a reality.” She spoke in an interview with Grand Kru TV recently in Monrovia.
Meanwhile, Regina Walker stated that her office, is committed in partnership with the Liberia National Police to publicly naming and shaming individuals consistently who abuse their wives at home. Additionally, she promised that any local leaders who are found to be compromising such cases throughout Grand Kru will face appropriate legal actions.
