Monrovia, Liberia, November 13, 2024—The Government of Liberia announces the suspected ongoing recruitment of Ex-fighters for subversive activities in neighboring Guinea.

The government says its revelation is based on intelligence provided by Guinean authorities and the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL).

Liberia’s Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah made the disclosure at a press conference in Monrovia on Tuesday, November 12, 2024.

Minister Piah says the suspected recruitment is targeting Liberians, particularly former fighters, for what he terms “subversive action in Guinea.”

He did not say exactly where the alleged recruitment is taking place, but he narrates that, based on assistance from INTERPOL, the Liberia government has arrested two Guinean nationals, Abraham Sheriff and Zayzay Fassou Touray, with Sheriff serving as financier of the recruitment.

Piah reveals that the two suspects have been handed over to the Government of Guinea.

“We know too much about what war means, and we are not determined to go back to it. We will continue to strengthen our democracy and work to consolidate peace in our subregion.” He underscores.

He also reaffirms the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting life and property, including its diplomatic relations with neighboring Guinea.

“Not an inch of Liberia’s territory will be used to cause subversion and in any other country,” Piah vows.

He discloses that a joint investigation of individuals or suspects involved in the situation is continuing, and they will pursue evidence without any malice but in the country’s supreme national interest.

He calls on all Liberians and residents to abide by and respect the rule of law, saying, “To live here is to respect the law.” Editing by Jonathan Browne
