-Liberians complain of lack of money, Traders say ‘No Business’

Residents of Ganta, and other parts of Nimba County are not happy this festive season due to the lack of means to properly celebrate the season. Business people Complaints of hardship marked  this year’s Christmas celebration with business leaders complaining that people are not buying.

Most of the market places were not as crowded as compared to the previous festive seasons, especially Christmas, which was highly celebrated.

The Daily Observer made several stops at some business centers across Nimba, especially Ganta to ascertain how the citizens were coping with festive seasons celebrated.

“No business, things are hard doing this Christmas season,” an Indian merchant in one of the Lucky Pharmacies in Ganta said.

With a very serious appearance as packed medical drugs on shelves, he said the begging is too much this season and people are not buying,” he said.

Most of the business places were not as crowded as it used to be, leaving most of the traders disappointed and confused over the trend of the seasoning trading.

“We took a huge amount of money from the savings club, but we are seeing the buyers,” said Junior Botoe, a trader selling on the street of Ganta.

“All our customers are just complaining the same, then where are we heading now,” he asked rhetorically.

People were seen floating around business centers owned by foreign nationals, with some begging for seasons, while others were some impersonating as security personnel to get packages for Christmas.

“We opened our branch in Ganta on December 8, 2024, but the tension from those claimed to be security are huge, imposing all types of fines but they are not referring us to the bank to paid said fine,” said an agent at the Africa #1 Cold Storage in Ganta.

“The tension is high, how will we get profits under this condition,” he said.

The Daily Observer observes salary delay of the civil servants, especially for the security may have been the cost of this too much begging or in other words ‘asking for Christmas’.

The economic hardship is also said to force everybody to become traders so as to sustain their family and keep life going, something that left many to say those who are selling are many then those who are supposed to buy.

“I pray to find something for my children to eat on Christmas day, because I am yet to get my salary,” said a man, who claimed to be a LIS Officer.

Even though there were complaints of hardship across the country, especially Nimba, people went about merry making by going clubbing.

There were high expectations from the Unity Party led Government by citizens, especially Nimbaians in terms of easing of hardship, impressive salary and speedily fighting of  corruption, but they are glooming over too many lapses, which somehow led to the burning of the Capitol Building.

While some seem to be in support of the so-called majority bloc, others described the entire law makers as performing unprofessionally and immaturely, because the idea of camping in the hotel to battle the speaker removal means they were acting under the influence(s) of others.

“All these hardships are because the houses are divided and the executive does not appear to bring them together, so it is bad for the government that we expect to be mature,” said one Gonwoekay, an elderly man who was on his shopping spree for the festive seasons.
