Seebeh, Sinoe County—A group of young people in Sinoe County have been warned against obstructing the operations of the Port of Greenville.
Under the banner “Concerned Youth of Seebeh” the young people have been obstructing the operations of the port through the staging of protests, but they have been warned to desist as that group does not represent the legitimate voice and aspirations of the youth of Seebeh — the community in which the port is located.
The concerned youth recently held two protests in less than a week, which nearly brought operations at the port to a grinding halt — actions that have since enraged many stakeholders in the county.
In a statement issued on Monday, December 9, the Seebeh Youth, a formally registered and recognized institution dedicated to advocacy for the well-being and empowerment of young people in Seebeh and its surrounding areas, termed the protesters as an illegal group and urged them to desist from obstructing the operations of the national facility.
Seebeh Youth, through its president, Augustine Boye Teah, emphasized that the actions of the “Concerned Youth of Seebeh” do not reflect the community’s true interests or aspirations—therefore urging the port management to not engage with this group, asserting that their disruptive tactics are divisive and counterproductive.
“This group does not represent the true interests or aspirations of the Seebeh Community. Their actions are personal, selfish, divisional and anti-productive,” Teah said. “They have no real agenda to improve the lives of young people and development in Seebeh.”
“We are calling on the management of the National Port Authority of Liberia, and the leadership of the Port of Greenville to desist from doing business directly or indirectly with the illegitimate group, “ Teah added.” We also want to call on politicians and influential figures within Sinoe County and outside Sinoe County urging them to refrain from supporting initiatives that undermine the collective development and Unity of Seebeh.”
“Our focus must be on unity and collective progress. Any political efforts that foster division and hinder the advancement of our people are counterproductive and not in the best interest of the community,” he said, “Our goal is to promote growth, opportunity, and harmony, not division.”
“This group is a collection of impostors, and their actions are not in line with the values or goals of Seebeh’s youth,” “Collaborating with them will only sow division, disrupt our community’s progress, and undermine the substantial achievements we have worked hard to attain.”
The Concerned Youth staged protest against the management of the Greenville Port on September 2, 2024 and again last weekend on December 7—protests that many believe were driven by self-interest and instigated by external forces outside the community, including from within the NPA in Monrovia and other parts of Sinoe, reliable sources have revealed.
“These protest actions that are being staged are only meant to undermine the good work that Cllr. Sylvia Tarley, the Port Manager, is here. She has also been of great help to the host community.”
Teah called on the authority of the Port of Greenville to resist through every Legal means any form of trespassing or obstruction of the port’s function, through illegal protest at the entrance of the Port.
“If any group contrary to the elected leaders of the community has issues with the Port or NPA, they must learn to channel their grievances through the legitimately elected community leadership committee which will take the right avenue to getting redress from the National Port Authority.
The Seebeh Youth leadership also takes this opportunity to commend the Management of the Port of Greenville for its positive contributions to the development of the Seebeh community, particularly under the direction of Cllr. Sylvia A. Tarley. One of the most notable initiatives she has undertaken is the successful implementation of the first-ever community clean-up program, held in honor of President Joseph Boakai’s birthday on November 30, 2024. This community service program, which focused on enhancing cleanliness and improving the environmental health of Seebeh, has had a transformative impact on the community.
Meanwhile, The Sinoe Port, under the guidance of the Port Director in Sinoe, engaged with the Seebeh community in September 2024 to initiate the NPA Social Corporate Responsibilities (SCR) program.
This initiative focuses on promoting social and economic development and empowerment within the Seebeh Community. As a follow-up to this engagement, the Seebeh Youth leadership is anticipating the implementation of the NPA SCR by the end of the year, as committed by the NPA Management in Monrovia and Sinoe County.
The leadership expresses gratitude to Cllr. Tarley for her dedicated efforts and commitment to community development. Additionally, the leadership appreciates the Port of Greenville’s decision to collaborate with the legitimate Seebeh Community Leadership to provide permanent employment opportunities for eight casual laborers, recognizing the positive impact on community empowerment and employment prospects for youth and citizens.
Despite these positive developments, concerns have been raised about disruptive individuals within the community who may hinder progress and unity. The leadership urges these individuals to cease divisive actions for the betterment of Seebeh and Sinoe County, emphasizing the importance of maintaining community integrity and unity.
