As part of efforts to ensure an inclusive governance and Natural Resource Accountability in Liberia, Integrity Watch Liberia (|WL) and the Embassy of Ireland near Monrovia has signed a €170,000 Grant Agreement. Integrity Watch Liberia  and the Embassy of Ireland in Liberia officially

signed the grant agreement to implement a project titled: “Strengthening Inclusive Governance and Natural Resource Accountability in Liberia”.

The initiative represents a significant step toward promoting transparency, accountability, and sustainable governance in Liberia’s natural resource sector. This partnership reflects a shared commitment between Integrity Watch Liberia and Irish Aid to address critical governance challenges and foster sustainable development in Liberia.

Harold M. Aidoo, Integrity Watch Liberia Executive Director, told journalists at the signing ceremony in Monrovia that the project’s overall goal is to enhance Liberia’s policy frameworks to support the sustainable and equitable management of its natural resources for the benefit of all Liberians. Over a one-year period, the project will focus on building the capacity of the Liberian Legislature to scrutinize policies and agreements related to natural resource management.

According to Aidoo, it also aimed at enhancing advocacy efforts by civil society organizations to push for transparent and accountable resource governance. Strengthening the coordination and oversight functions of regulatory bodies to ensure policy compliance. Promoting inclusive decision-making by engaging marginalized groups, including women and youth, in governance processes.

He indicated that the target beneficiaries include lawmakers, regulatory institutions (Ministry of Lands, Mines and Energy, Environmental Protection Agency and the National Bureau of Concession, community leaders, civil society actors, and local communities  directly affected by natural resource management decisions. The project will also work to create spaces for dialogue and engagement, empowering citizens to hold decision-makers accountable.

Gérard Considine, the Ambassador of Ireland to Liberia, also said that the initiative is designed to strengthen collaboration between civil society organizations (CSOs) and lawmakers in the country. According to him, the initiative aims to promote greater oversight by the national legislature and empower CSOs to hold the government accountable, ultimately benefiting the citizens of Liberia.

“This initiative covers a wide area,” Considine stated. “By enhancing the agreement between the concessionaires, lawmakers, and CSOs, we anticipate significant improvements in governance and transparency.”

As part of a five-year strategy launched in 2018, the Irish Embassy has conducted a comprehensive analysis of the socio-political context in Liberia to identify key gaps, particularly concerning climate action. Reflecting on the progress made over the past five years, Considine noted that previous efforts primarily focused on electoral processes.

However, recognizing the continuous challenges faced by Liberia, he expressed a commitment to addressing additional gaps by working more closely with CSOs on issues of accountability.

“The Liberian people deserve access to more information, including insights into how their budget is allocated and how resources are managed by their leaders,” Considine emphasized, reinforcing the importance of transparency in governance.

This initiative marks a pivotal step toward fostering a more accountable leadership in Liberia, ensuring that citizens are better informed about the management of their nation’s resources.
