The vibrant city of Gisenyi recently played host to a first-of-a-kind celebration as the Liberian Community in Rwanda (LIBCOR) launched the inaugural All-Liberian Festival 2024. Under the unifying theme “Celebrating Unity, Cultural Heritage, and Progress,” the three-day event, from December 29-31, 2024, drew an impressive turnout of dignitaries, local supporters, and Liberians from across the region, marking a significant milestone in the celebration of their culture abroad.
The festival showcased a diverse array of cultural offerings, including traditional dances, informative panel discussions, sports events, and awards ceremony honoring outstanding Liberians. Attendees dressed in colorful attire that reflected the rich cultural vibrancy of Liberia. The event was organized by the Liberian Community of Rwanda (LIBCOR), whose leadership was praised for crafting an occasion that resonated deeply with participants.
Emmanuel Patrick, the Chairman of the Liberian Community in Rwanda, highlighted the significance of the festival in a heartfelt address. “This event is not just a celebration; it is a symbol of our enduring spirit, culture, and resilience as Liberians wherever we may be,” he stated. He also called on the diaspora to actively contribute to Liberia’s development, expressing hope for collective achievements that would benefit future generations.
A particular highlight of the festival was the inspiring address by a representative from the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Kigali Independent University. She lauded the beauty and energy of Liberian cultural expressions, remarking, “Your culture is what separates you from the rest of the world.” Her message encouraged Liberians and other international students in Rwanda to continue to share their unique cultural identities.
Festival highlights included traditional music and cuisine that transported attendees to the heart of Liberia. Engaging panel discussions facilitated dialogue on critical issues, including the diaspora’s role in national advancement, with reflections on lessons drawn from Rwanda’s progress.
As the festival drew to a close, participants expressed overwhelming appreciation for the event’s success and shared aspirations for it to become an annual fixture for Liberians in Rwanda and globally. LIBCOR’s efforts served not only to unite the diaspora but also to present Liberia’s cultural wealth to the local Rwandan population and the broader international community.
