GRAND BASSA – Just a day after President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. conferred one of Liberia’s highest national honors on Emmanuel Nuku Reeves for more than five decades of distinguished public service, the President and Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung traveled to Grand Bassa County on Thursday to dedicate the Geneva Reeves Johnson Event Center, a major private investment in the county’s development.

The dedication in St. John formed part of activities leading to Liberia’s 179th Independence Day celebrations and underscored the government’s recognition of Reeves’ contributions both as a longtime public servant and as a private investor committed to national development.
Constructed by Reeves, a prominent son of Grand Bassa, the modern event center is expected to host conferences, cultural programs, civic engagements, and community events, while stimulating economic and social activities in the county.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Boakai commended Reeves for giving back to his home county, describing the project as an example of how private investment can complement the government’s development agenda by expanding opportunities for community engagement and economic growth.
Vice President Koung also praised the initiative, calling it a model of patriotism and encouraging other Liberians to invest in projects that improve their communities and contribute to national progress.
The dedication came just one day after Reeves was admitted into the Order of the Star of Africa with the rank of Grand Commander, one of Liberia’s highest national honors, during the 179th Independence Day Investiture Ceremony in Monrovia.
Reading the official citation on behalf of President Boakai, Chief of Protocol Ambassador Antoinette Munah Wolo described Reeves as a career public servant whose professionalism, integrity, and unwavering commitment have strengthened Liberia’s public institutions over more than five decades.
She noted that Reeves began his career as a trainee cadet at the Ministry of Finance and the Bureau of Maritime Affairs before rising through key positions in financial oversight, maritime administration, and public service. His career also included assignments with the Office of Financial Affairs in Washington, D.C., a satellite office of Liberia’s Ministry of Finance, Liberia Services in Virginia, and consultancy work with the Liberia International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR), where he helped strengthen the country’s maritime financial oversight.
Wolo further praised Reeves’ tenure as Deputy Commissioner for Financial Affairs and Financial Officer of the Liberia Maritime Authority, saying he demonstrated exceptional integrity, sound judgment, and steadfast commitment to responsible financial management while helping safeguard key national institutions and advance Liberia’s maritime interests.
Thursday’s dedication drew residents, local leaders, government officials, and invited guests, many of whom described the Geneva Reeves Johnson Event Center as a landmark addition to Grand Bassa County. The facility is expected to become a central venue for civic, cultural, and social events, adding another enduring legacy to Reeves’ record of public service and community development.
