MONROVIA – The two foreign nationals accused in Liberia’s reported US$317.68 million cocaine trafficking case have been remanded to the Monrovia Central Prison after making their first appearance before the Paynesville City Court.
The suspects, who are facing charges linked to one of the country’s largest cocaine seizures in recent years, were ordered detained pending further court proceedings. Several other individuals accused in unrelated civil matters were also processed before the court on the same day.
Liberian law enforcement authorities recently announced the interception of a massive cocaine shipment with an estimated street value of US$317.68 million. Investigators say the illicit consignment was allegedly destined for Europe.
Following their arrest, the two principal suspects remained in police custody while investigators conducted preliminary inquiries. Upon the completion of the initial investigation, they were formally charged and presented before the Paynesville City Court to begin the judicial process.ì
Court records identify one suspect as a holder of both Spanish and Colombian passports, while the second suspect is a Serbian national.
The court ordered both men remanded to the Monrovia Central Prison pending further hearings and the continuation of prosecution.
The case is being heard by the Paynesville City Court because the alleged offense occurred within its territorial jurisdiction.
Authorities say investigations remain ongoing as they seek to determine the full scope of the alleged international drug trafficking network and identify any additional individuals who may have been involved.
