MONROVIA – Suspects accused in Liberia’s record-breaking US$317.68 million cocaine trafficking case, including two foreign nationals and several Liberians, have been remanded to the Monrovia Central Prison after making their first appearance before the Paynesville City Court on Friday.
The court ordered the detention of the defendants after they were formally charged in connection with the seizure of 3,971 kilograms of suspected cocaine, the largest narcotics haul in Liberia’s history. Because the offenses are non-bailable under Liberian law, the accused will remain in custody pending the conclusion of court proceedings.
Among those remanded are a Serbian national and a suspect reported to hold both Spanish and Colombian citizenship, along with several Liberian co-defendants allegedly linked to the transnational drug trafficking operation.
Following the court’s ruling, heavily escorted security officers transported the suspects to the Monrovia Central Prison on Friday evening, July 24, where they were processed into custody.
The defendants are accused of involvement in the July 21 drug seizure carried out by the Joint National Security Investigative Task Force at a property in the VOA Community along the Roberts International Airport (RIA) Highway in Duazon, Margibi County.
The suspects will remain behind bars until the case is heard by the appropriate court, as Liberian law does not permit bail for the offenses with which they have been charged.
The high-profile case stems from a coordinated security operation that culminated in the recovery of approximately 3,971 kilograms of processed suspected cocaine, valued at an estimated US$317.68 million on the international illicit market.
The operation followed the arrest of several persons of interest on July 20, after intelligence gathered during the investigation led security agencies to the VOA Community property.
Acting on a court-authorized search and seizure warrant, members of the Joint National Security Investigative Task Force conducted a raid on July 21, uncovering what officials have described as the largest cocaine seizure in Liberia’s history.
Announcing the seizure on July 22, Attorney General and Minister of Justice Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh, speaking on behalf of the Joint National Security Investigative Task Force, said preliminary investigations indicate that a sophisticated transnational drug trafficking network may have been operating in Liberia for more than six years.
According to the Justice Minister, the alleged operation involved foreign nationals working alongside local collaborators, prompting an ongoing investigation aimed at identifying and prosecuting everyone connected to the suspected trafficking network.
The Liberia National Police (LNP) and the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) have described the seizure as an unprecedented breakthrough in the country’s fight against narcotics trafficking, emphasizing that investigations remain active and additional arrests have not been ruled out.
The case has intensified public scrutiny of Liberia’s anti-narcotics strategy, border security, and law enforcement capacity, while renewing concerns over the country’s vulnerability to international drug trafficking syndicates.
Government officials have pledged that every individual found responsible will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, describing the operation as a major milestone in Liberia’s campaign against organized transnational crime.
The suspects will remain at the Monrovia Central Prison pending further court proceedings as prosecutors prepare to move forward with one of the largest and most consequential narcotics prosecutions in Liberia’s history.
