Liberia: After a Bad Start for The Office of War and Economic Crimes Courts, Advocates Demand a Reset

“There should have been wider consultations with the civil society, victims and the Bar [Liberian National Bar Association]. It is the first time in our history that we have done this so it really matters. It has nothing to do with presidential authority or his qualifications. We require support of the wider society. Conversation with civil society was not done. It’s shocking. In the end it’s the victims who need to feel closure on this.”. – Tiawan Gongloe, renowned human rights lawyer and ex-President of the Liberia National Bar Association.

“President Boakai, Mr. Massaquoi’s appointment will likely sow seeds of discord, and contribute to disunity and confrontation.  We respectfully request that you reconsider this direction so that the purpose of the WECC is not mooted from the outset.” – Coalition for Justice in Liberia.
