Monrovia — The Catholic Archbishop of Monrovia, Most Rev. Dr. Gabriel Blamo Jubwe, has emphasized the critical importance for pastoral care providers to deeply understand the Liberian context in which they minister to the lay faithful. Speaking at a one-day workshop organized by the Archdiocese for priests and religious workers, Archbishop Jubwe highlighted the role of contextual awareness in providing effective pastoral care.

Reflecting on the theme, “Understanding Liberia’s Past and Present for Effective Pastoral Work in the Archdiocese of Monrovia,” Archbishop Jubwe underscored the necessity for clergy and pastoral workers to be aware of Liberia’s unique social and cultural landscape. This awareness, he noted, is essential when performing vital pastoral activities such as counseling, home and hospital visitations, officiating at weddings and funerals, and administering sacraments. The Archbishop stressed that such an approach would allow pastoral workers to adopt a more holistic and empathetic approach, enabling them to better connect with the faithful and respond effectively to their needs.

The workshop’s chief facilitator, Dr. Debey Sayndee, provided an in-depth historical analysis of Liberia, highlighting and interpreting key events that have shaped the nation and its people. Dr. Sayndee noted that a comprehensive understanding of Liberia’s history enables pastoral workers to address the needs of the people in physical, psychological, and spiritual dimensions. “If you know a little more of the context, then you will effectively meet the needs of the people,” he explained.

In his closing remarks, Archbishop Jubwe reminded the attendees that Liberia has undergone profound changes across various sectors over the years. He urged pastoral care providers to stay informed about the evolving dynamics and realities of the present Liberian context, which is essential for relevant and responsive pastoral work.

The workshop saw the participation of 75 attendees, including diocesan and religious priests as well as brothers and sisters from various congregations within the Archdiocese of Monrovia. The event was seen as a significant step in promoting an informed and contextually sensitive approach to pastoral care within the Archdiocese.
