Liberia: Boost to Handball Development in Liberia: High School Athletes Shine in OCM Tournament

Monrovia – Christopher N. Vonziah, Chief of Office Staff to former District #11 Candidate Representative Dr. Thomas N. Tweh, has praised the performances of high school athletes in the recently concluded Original Country Man (OCM) handball tournament, describing it as a significant boost to the development of the sport in Liberia.

Speaking during the official presentation of trophies and certificates to the winners and participating schools at the Sports Commission on Broad Street, Vonziah explained that the tournament was sponsored by Honorable Tweh. Tweh had been approached by officials of the Liberia National Handball Association (LNHA) for support, which he gladly provided.

“Dr. Tweh was contacted by the LNHA to help with sponsorship because they are passionate about promoting the game of handball. Mr. Tweh, a sports enthusiast, decided to support their efforts,” Vonziah stated.

According to Vonziah, the budget for the league was $3,500 USD, which was provided to the Association for the successful running of the tournament. He further disclosed that Dr. Tweh, currently out of the country, has assured handball enthusiasts of his continued support for the sport.

Meanwhile, the winners of the tournament in the various categories were celebrated. In the female category, St. James Foundation emerged as champions after defeating Bright Foundation 9-6. In the male category, Matilda Newport triumphed over N.V. Massaquoi with a close score of 22-20.

The third-place trophy in the female category was awarded to N.V. Massaquoi after Sims Community School failed to show up. St. James Foundation School secured third place in the male category after Gibraltar Public School did not honor their game.

Individual awards were also given out: St. James goalkeeper Hawa Varney was named Best Goalkeeper, while Faith Nyumah of Bright Foundation won the Highest Goal Scorer award with 13 goals. Easter J. Flomo of Bright Foundation School was named MVP in the female category, and Ansu Kamara of N.V. Massaquoi received the MVP award in the male category. Amos Teah of Matilda Newport was the Highest Goal Scorer with 35 goals, and the Best Goalkeeper award went to Sekou A. Sesay of Newport Street.
