Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — The Congress for Democratic Change USA (CDCUSA) has issued a scathing statement condemning what it describes as unconstitutional and undemocratic actions orchestrated by the administration of President Joseph Boakai to unseat the Speaker of Liberia’s House of Representatives, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa.
The organization says these actions constitute a direct assault on Liberia’s Constitution, democratic principles, and the rule of law.
In the statement issued through its National Secretary Abraham A. Manobah and National Chairman-elect, CDCUSA Yahaya T. Sheriff, CDCUSA accused President Boakai’s administration of displaying authoritarian tendencies by interfering in the operations of another branch of government. The group argued that the alleged attempt to remove Speaker Koffa is a deliberate distraction from what they described as the administration’s failures, including rampant corruption and the looting of public resources, widespread lawlessness and failure to uphold public security, nepotism and the arbitrary dismissal of those with differing political views and neglect of critical issues such as healthcare, education, and employment.
“By attempting to remove Speaker Koffa without due process, President Boakai and his allies risk plunging Liberia into a constitutional crisis,” the statement read. “These actions tarnish Liberia’s democratic image on the global stage and erode public trust in the nation’s institutions.”
Backing Speaker Koffa
CDCUSA declared its unwavering support for Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, calling him the legitimate leader of the 55th Legislature and praising his dedication to integrity, stability, and accountability. The group emphasized that any attempt to remove him outside of constitutional procedures would be both illegal and a betrayal of the Liberian people’s trust.
“Speaker Koffa’s leadership has been a beacon of stability within the Legislature, a quality that is critical in the face of corruption and authoritarian overreach,” the statement added.
Call to Action
CDCUSA issued a four-point call to action, urging the Liberian Judiciary to uphold its constitutional duty and ensure that justice prevails, with the Supreme Court asserting its authority to safeguard the Constitution and legislators to resist any interference from the Executive Branch and prioritize the interests of the Liberian people by preserving the integrity of the House of Representatives.
It also called the International Community to monitor developments in Liberia closely and hold the Boakai administration accountable for any anti-democratic actions and the Liberian People to remain vigilant and defend their hard-won democracy.
Further In the statement,CDCUSA condemned what it called “reckless and unconstitutional” actions by President Boakai and his allies, reiterating its commitment to justice and democratic governance.
“We stand with Speaker J. Fonati Koffa and reaffirm our commitment to justice, democracy, and the rule of law. Liberia’s democracy is not for sale. We will continue to stand as a voice for accountability, fairness, and the rights of the Liberian people, both at home and abroad,” the group said.
