Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) has refuted recent media reports alleging a leadership crisis within its ranks and questioning the authority of its General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Christopher Wleh Toe, I. The Council described the claims as unfounded and aimed at undermining its unity and integrity.

In a statement released on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the LCC affirmed that Rev. Toe continues to serve under the mandate of the 34th General Assembly and remains legitimate, along with the leadership of President Rev. Dr. Samuel B. Reeves, Jr., until the next biennial assembly in May 2025.

“Any calls for an early assembly are unconstitutional and disruptive,” the statement read. “The leadership emphatically states that it still enjoys full confidence in Rev. Toe as its General Secretary.”

Response to Allegations

The LCC criticized individuals spreading what it called baseless falsehoods and urged transparency from those making such claims. It also called on the media to maintain balance and accuracy in its reporting.

The Council appealed specifically to the Lutheran Church of Liberia to uphold the constitutional provisions of the LCC and reject actions that seek to undermine its governance.

“As a full member of the LCC, the Lutheran Church of Liberia has historically provided presidential leadership, including figures such as Bishop Roland Diggs, Bishop Sumuward Harris, and Bishop D. Jensen Seyenkulo,” the statement noted. “We urge the Church not to support any illegal group using its facilities for unauthorized activities against the LCC.”

‘Focus on Mission’

Reaffirming its commitment to fostering peace, reconciliation, and national dialogue, the LCC encouraged all its members to adhere to the principles of unity and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

“We urge the Christian community to avoid actions that could create unnecessary division and instead uphold the Church’s role in promoting harmony,” the Council said.

The LCC’s leadership remains steadfast in its mission and is committed to addressing any internal challenges within the framework of its constitution.

The statement concluded with the signature of Rev. Dr. Samuel B. Reeves, Jr., President of the Liberia Council of Churches.
