His court appearance comes against a backdrop of serious allegations regarding his treatment while in custody.

Etheridge, who was arrested on January 10, 2025, has been at the center of controversy after his lawyer, Cllr. Jonathan Massaquoi accused the National Security Agency (NSA) of employing unlawful interrogation methods.

These include claims of physical abuse and coercive tactics aimed at eliciting incriminating statements against other individuals, including Speaker J. Fonati Koffa.

The case has drawn public attention, raising critical questions about human rights and due process in Liberia.

Cllr. Massaquoi emphasized the necessity for accountability and transparency within the security sector, calling for a thorough investigation into the treatment of detainees.

Justice Minister Oswald Tweh has publicly denied the allegations of torture, affirming the government’s commitment to a fair and transparent investigation. However, the claims made by Etheridge and other detainees have sparked widespread concern about the integrity of the investigation and the treatment of suspects within the legal system.
