MONROVIA – In the wake of recent unrest stemming from a land dispute in the Jacob Town community, the Federation of African Law Students (FALAS) in Liberia issued a resounding call for adherence to the rule of law, emphasizing the paramount importance of judicial resolution and governmental accountability.

FALAS, renowned as Africa’s leading body of law student organizations, operates with charters across 40 African nations. Dedicated to fostering Pan-African values within the legal profession and society at large, FALAS aims to unify the continent and promote justice, equality, and fairness.

Highlighting the need for a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, FALAS underscores the critical role of legal institutions in upholding individual rights and resolving disputes. Referencing Article 66 of the Liberian Constitution, which designates the Supreme Court as the final arbiter of constitutional issues, FALAS stresses the importance of respecting the judiciary’s authority in settling legal disputes.

The recent violence sparked by a land dispute underscores the urgent need for a judicial resolution. In a statement read by FALAS’ Country Director Danieletta Fefe Sleyon, the organization urges all affected parties to seek redress through the court system rather than resorting to violence. Emphasizing the significance of property rights, FALAS asserts the necessity of respecting land rights laws to maintain social order and stability.

Furthermore, FALAS expresses concerns regarding recent government regulations, particularly those affecting the movement of motorcycles and tricycles in certain parts of Monrovia. While acknowledging the state’s obligation to ensure law and order, FALAS calls for the respectful treatment of citizens’ rights and urges government officials to execute their duties with transparency and accountability.

In a message directed to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., FALAS calls for proactive measures to address economic challenges and ensure the timely disbursement of civil servants’ salaries to prevent public unrest. Additionally, FALAS calls for enhanced police professionalism in maintaining public safety, emphasizing the importance of upholding constitutional rights and avoiding excessive use of force.

Sleyon was joined by her colleagues Ephraim T. Nyumah, International secretary General of FALAS and Robert Boandolo, past International Director of Communications. Responding to questions during the press conference held at the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law, they pledged their organization’s commitment to promoting the rule of law, advocating for government accountability, and safeguarding the rights and freedoms of all citizens.
