Speaking during the ongoing funeral ceremonies in Ganta, Nimba County, Weah reflected on Johnson’s journey from a war-time leader to a statesman and religious figure, acknowledging the profound impact he had on Liberia’s turbulent history.

“Senator Johnson’s story is one of transformation,” Weah said. “He transitioned from a wartime leader to a statesman and ultimately a religious leader, dedicating much of his later years to preaching redemption and reconciliation.”

Weah commended Johnson for using his latter platform to foster peace and forgiveness, despite the shadows of his past.

“Senator Johnson was a man who left an indelible mark on our nation. While his past was not without controversy, he sought to make amends and worked tirelessly to promote healing and reconciliation. His contributions to Liberia’s peace process and his leadership in the Senate will not be forgotten,” Weah added.

A Legacy of Complexity

Prince Yormie Johnson rose to prominence during Liberia’s brutal civil wars, becoming one of the conflict’s most polarizing figures. However, his post-war journey saw a remarkable transformation, marked by his election to the Liberian Senate, where he represented Nimba County for nearly two decades, and his leadership of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR).

In his later years, Johnson also embraced a religious calling, founding a ministry focused on reconciliation and spiritual healing. Despite criticisms of his past, many supporters in Nimba County and beyond revered him as a champion for their rights and a voice of advocacy.

Weah used the occasion to urge Liberians to focus on building a united and peaceful nation.

“As we reflect on Senator Johnson’s life and legacy, let us also reflect on our collective responsibility to move Liberia forward,” Weah emphasized. “Our nation has endured pain and division, but it is through forgiveness and reconciliation that we can truly heal.”

The funeral ceremonies have drawn dignitaries from across Liberia and beyond, with many paying tribute to Johnson’s contributions to the country’s post-war recovery and his advocacy for Nimba County.

Johnson’s passing marks the end of an era for a man whose life encapsulated both the struggles and hopes of a nation seeking lasting peace.
