Speaking at a press conference held at her office in Congo Town over the weekend, Dr. Gaisie highlighted the importance of citizens taking advantage of eye care services to diagnose and address potential vision issues early, especially difficulties in identifying objects.

Dr. Gaisie, a specialist in ophthalmology, noted that while there have been significant improvements within Liberia’s Eye Care Services (ECS), more financial support from both national and international donors is needed to strengthen the sector.

She outlined the various services offered at Karish Eye Care, including eye screenings, examinations, basic laboratory eye services, community outreach to identify vision problems, and the provision of eyeglasses.

While acknowledging the challenges faced by her institution, Dr. Gaisie commended the dedication of the staff, whose professional efforts have contributed to reducing eye pressure and combating other eye diseases.

During her address, which coincided with the observance of World Sight Day, Dr. Gaisie called for a more robust strategy to tackle eye diseases, ensuring that people affected by vision problems can enjoy an improved quality of life. She stressed the importance of health practitioners adopting practical and refined methodologies to combat diseases that threaten vision and disrupt the healthcare system.

“On this day, we come together to raise awareness about the importance of eye health and the need for accessible vision care for everyone. Vision is a vital part of our daily lives, influencing how we experience the world and connect with others. Yet, millions of people around the globe suffer from preventable blindness and visual impairment,” Dr. Gaisie said.

She urged health workers, particularly those dealing directly with eye problems, to work toward removing barriers that prevent individuals from receiving the treatment and support they need. From regular eye examinations to educating the public on eye health, every step counts in creating a future where everyone can see clearly, she added.

Dr. Gaisie also called on citizens to take an active role in combating poor vision and eye damage, regardless of age or background, to restore and maintain clear vision.

She extended her appeal to the government and international partners, encouraging them to see this as an opportunity to assist those in need by addressing sight-related problems. She also expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Health and the Lion’s Club for their continuous partnership in improving eye care services in Liberia.

World Sight Day, celebrated annually on October 12, is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of eye health and the challenges faced by those living with vision problems.

Karish Eye Care offers a wide range of eye services, including diagnosis and treatment of ocular diseases, comprehensive eye exams, and advanced optical services.
