MONROVIA — Gbarpolu County Representative, Luther Collins, has filed a formal complaint against Justice Minister and Attorney General, Oswald Tweh and Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman before the Independent National Commission on Human Rights.
In his letter dated December 19, 2024, a copy of which is in the possession of this paper, Rep. Collins accused Min. Tweh and Inspector General Coleman of unlawfully deploying officers at the grounds of the Capitol to brutalize him (Rep. Collins) for no reason.
The Gbarpolu County lawmaker explained that the situation occurred while he was exercising his legislative functions by attempting to attend the 2025 Fiscal Year National Budget sitting or hearings.
“On Monday, 09 December, 2024, officers of the Liberian National Police (LNP) under direct instructions of the two senior officials of the Liberian Government unlawfully deployed on the ground of the Capitol Building the seat of the National Legislature brutalized me for NO reason”, Collins wrote.
“This incident occurred in front of my BI-15 office on the First Floor of the building. It happened while I was exercising my normal legislative function or duty by attempting to attend the 2025 Fiscal Year National Budget sitting or hearings,” he continued.
Rep. Collins further alleged that he was severely whipped by officers assigned up Capitol, thus leading bodily wounds.
Rep. Collins: “Because of the gravity of the flogging received from the police on that day, I sustained serious wounds in my ribs, right hand, legs and shoulders respectively. Bruises or scars as a result of the beating are still visible on my body. One of my office staffers who was with me during the incident and tried preventing the police from beating me was also affected.”
“Due to the severity of the heavy or hard handedness, my office staff (Mr. Eric Scott) and I were admitted on the same day at the Hope of Women Hospital located on the late Adolphus Benedict Tolbert known as A.B Tolbert Road in Paynesville for treatment,” he stated.
Rep. Collins also accused the police officers of taking away his Longues Level Quartz Watch valued at US$1, 000.00 (One Thousand United States Dollars) and a reading glass in the process.
Branding himself as a respecter of the law, Rep. Collins requested the Independent National Commission on Human Rights to launch a thorough investigation into the matter consonance with the rule of law.
