Liberia: LEGISPOOL Condemns Attack on Secretary General, Demands Swift Action

by lnn

CAPITOL HILL, Monrovia – The Legislative Press Pool (LEGISPOOL) has condemned in the strongest terms the violent attack on its Secretary General, Blamo N. Toe, allegedly by an officer of the Executive Protection Service (EPS) identified as Korvah Jomo. The incident occurred on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, during President Joseph Boakai’s visit to the Legislature, as Journalist Toe carried out his duties providing media coverage.

LEGISPOOL, the body representing journalists assigned to cover the Liberian Legislature, described the attack as not just an assault on an individual but a serious threat to press freedom and the democratic principles that underpin Liberia’s governance.

“This reprehensible act undermines the vital role of journalists in a democratic society and erodes the public’s right to information,” the organization stated in its condemnation.

Press Freedom Under Attack

The incident has drawn widespread criticism, with LEGISPOOL emphasizing that violence against journalists threatens the free flow of information and public accountability. The organization stressed that acts of intimidation and aggression against media professionals should have no place in Liberia’s democratic framework.

Journalist Toe, who also reports for The Liberian Investigator, was reportedly performing his duties in a professional manner when the attack occurred. Eyewitnesses recounted that the EPS officer physically assaulted him without provocation, raising concerns over the safety of journalists covering high-profile events.

Calls for Accountability

In its statement, LEGISPOOL called on the relevant authorities, including the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), to launch an immediate and impartial investigation into the incident. “Holding those responsible accountable is not just about justice for Blamo N. Toe but also about sending a clear message that attacks on journalists will not be tolerated,” the organization declared.

LEGISPOOL also urged the government and law enforcement agencies to strengthen measures to protect journalists, ensuring they can operate without fear of intimidation or violence.

Solidarity and Commitment

The leadership of LEGISPOOL reaffirmed its unwavering support for Blamo N. Toe and all journalists facing risks while performing their professional duties. The organization highlighted the critical role of the media in fostering transparency, promoting good governance, and serving the public interest.

“The safety of journalists is paramount to the health of our democracy,” LEGISPOOL emphasized, calling on stakeholders to collectively uphold press freedom as a cornerstone of Liberia’s democratic progress.

As Liberia continues to grapple with challenges to its democratic values, LEGISPOOL’s statement serves as a rallying cry for the protection of media professionals and the preservation of press freedom in the country.
