Through its recent distribution of food and non-food items, LAFL continues to showcase its unwavering commitment to improving the lives of those in need in Liberia.
Empowering the Most Vulnerable
The recent food and non-food distribution, which reached orphanages, communities, and individuals with disabilities, is part of LAFL’s broader mission to offer practical support to Liberia’s most underserved populations.
As Gwenderlyn L. Walkie, a local staff member, emphasized, LAFL is dedicated to addressing the pressing needs of vulnerable groups in Monrovia and its surrounding areas. “We are a nonprofit organization committed to addressing the needs of our at-risk communities in Liberia. Our efforts range from supplying food and essential resources to offering educational programs and support services, all aimed at making a positive impact on the lives of those around us,” Gwenderlyn stated.
Addressing Educational Needs and Building Sustainable Resources
Beyond providing immediate aid, LAFL is also deeply invested in the long-term development of Liberia’s youth. The organization has established several fully operational computer labs in the Monrovia area, providing young Liberians with the skills necessary for success in a technology-driven world.
LAFL has also played a vital role in the reconstruction of libraries, offering invaluable educational resources to children who might otherwise have limited access to learning materials.
Each year, LAFL hosts a charity dinner to raise funds for a Learning Resource Center, which is designed to support underprivileged youths with educational tools, technology, and guidance. According to Anthony Watson, the founder of LAFL, this effort is part of a larger vision to ensure that every child, regardless of their background, has access to the resources they need to thrive. “Our work is a blessing,” Watson explained. “What started as a personal mission has evolved into an organization that is transforming lives in Liberia.”
Partnering for Change
One of LAFL’s key initiatives is its partnership with Evangelist Joshua Milton Blyden, with whom they are working to provide aid and support for disadvantaged youths, often referred to as “zogos” in Liberia. These young individuals, often marginalized and living on the streets, benefit from food donations and the organization’s outreach programs aimed at removing them from vulnerable circumstances.
In addition, LAFL has made donations to several schools, including Jones L. Moore Public School in Gbengbar on the Robertsfield, where modern computer labs and equipment have been provided to enhance educational opportunities for students. The organization has also donated sanitary pads to schools, addressing the need for proper menstrual hygiene and ensuring that female students are able to attend school with dignity.
Ben Davis, Vice Principal for Student Affairs at Jones L. Moore Public School, expressed gratitude for LAFL’s contributions. “We are thankful for the generous donation of computer labs and equipment,” Davis said. “However, we also need more basic resources like chairs for classrooms. Many of our students are without proper seating, and this is something we hope the organization can help address.”
A Strong Network of Support
Anthony Watson also took a moment to express gratitude for the generous support from partners and organizations that make LAFL’s work possible. “We could not do this without the help of our partners,” Watson said. “I want to thank DTE, LOCAL 223 AFLCIO UWUA, LAM (Liberia Association of Michigan), National Heating and Cooling, IBEW LOCAL 17, Catholic Central High School, and many others who have made our work in Liberia possible.”
These partnerships have been instrumental in the growth and success of Loving Arms for Liberia, enabling the organization to expand its reach and impact, providing vital resources to thousands of Liberians in need.
Looking Forward
As Loving Arms for Liberia continues its mission of supporting the most vulnerable, it calls on others to join the movement. Through donations, partnerships, and support, LAFL aims to create lasting change for Liberia’s most marginalized communities.
The organization is not only a beacon of hope for those struggling to meet their basic needs but also a driving force in creating opportunities for education, empowerment, and future success for Liberia’s youth.
