Monrovia—In a decisive move, the “Majority Block” of the House of Representatives has invoked Article 33 of the Liberian Constitution to convene an urgent session in the Joint Chamber of the Legislature, largely motivated by a significant loss of trust in House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa.
A letter from Acting Chief Clerk James Toubie to Chief Clerk Mildred Sayon indicated that a resolution, signed by a majority of lawmakers, states that Speaker Koffa no longer has the confidence of the Majority Block. This action highlights the representatives’ commitment to their legislative responsibilities and their accountability to the people of Liberia.
In accordance with House Standing Rule #12, the Majority Block has requested the presence of Madam Sayon and her clerical staff within 48 hours to aid in the proper facilitation of the session.
“The prompt compliance with this directive is crucial for upholding the constitutional process and ensuring the uninterrupted functioning of the House of Representatives,” Toubie emphasized.
This latest development signifies a critical turning point in the internal leadership struggle within the House, as over 40 lawmakers persist in their efforts to remove Speaker Koffa from his position. The outcome of this session could decide the fate of Speaker Koffa.
