Liberia-The staff of Liberia’s National Elections Commission (NEC) has publicly expressed gratitude to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for the decisive action of indefinitely suspending Chairperson Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah.

In a statement, the NEC workforce highlighted longstanding grievances and alleged misconduct under Lansanah’s leadership, which they claim created a toxic work environment and disrupted the Commission’s operations. The staff commended President Boakai for acting within his legal authority to restore stability and accountability at the NEC.

They view the suspension as justified and aligned with legal provisions for removing a chairperson for cause. Allegations against Chairperson Lansanah financial mismanagement accusations include awarding contracts to unqualified companies, accepting kickbacks, and overseeing the procurement of a non-functional solar system worth over US$200,000.

The chairperson allegedly made unilateral decisions regarding budgets, staff transfers, and departmental restructuring without consulting fellow commissioners. Reports of disrespect, arbitrary dismissals, and fostering a hostile environment that weakened staff morale. The alleged mismanagement resulted in operational paralysis and a strained relationship with key partners, including the UNDP. Favoritism and collusion with influential individuals were cited as additional factors undermining the Commission’s integrity.

The staff urged President Boakai to commission a thorough audit of the NEC’s operations and finances. They requested systemic reforms and accountability for those involved in any misconduct. The NEC staff pledged to resume normal operations by January 20, 2025, and reaffirmed their commitment to conducting transparent and credible elections.

The statement criticized opposition figures, such as Musa Bility, for politicizing the suspension and undermining efforts to restore integrity to the NEC.

In conclusion, the NEC staff described the suspension as a pivotal step toward rescuing the Commission from years of mismanagement and authoritarian rule under Chairperson Lansanah. They expressed hope for further measures to restore public trust and ensure the NEC fulfills its electoral mandate with credibility and transparency.
