Liberia Placed On Cargo Restrictions…Delta Airlines Responds To Security Lapses In US$19.2M Drug Bust

Delta Airlines has imposed a complete embargo on all cargo shipments to, from, and through Liberia on Delta or Delta Connection aircraft. According to a statement posted on Delta Airlines’ website, this restriction means no freight will be accepted for transport, regardless of the air waybill stock.

Delta Airlines placed a total block on all freight shipments moving into, out of, or connecting through Liberia. Affected services apply to all Delta Airlines and Delta Connection flights. Delta has not operated direct passenger flights to Monrovia since 2014, but this embargo specifically stops all connecting cargo shipments.

According to the statement, the embargo was introduced in response to increasing concerns over transnational drug trafficking through the region. It closely follows a major June 2026 seizure at the Roberts International Airport, where Liberian authorities and Joint Security forces confiscated 198 plates of suspected cocaine estimated at a street value of US$19.2 millions

The full statement released on Delta Airline’s website noted that, “Delta has placed a complete embargo on all cargo to/from/thru the following countries on Delta or Delta Connection aircraft, regardless of the air waybill stock. Some of the affected countries according to Delta Airlines include Cuba, Iran, Lebanon, Liberia, Libya, Maldives, Myanmar (Burma), North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

The statement furthered, “It is important to note that Delta suspended all flights to Liberia since 2014 but was still onboarding and connecting passengers and cargo from Liberia. In June, the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) intercepted a massive shipment of $19.2 million worth of cocaine at Roberts International Airport (RIA). The bust occurred on June 8, when LDEA agents discovered 198 compressed plates of cocaine concealed in six cargo boxes destined for export via Brussels Airlines. The June 8 bust is one of the largest in the country’s history. Key details regarding the operation and its aftermath include. The 237,600 grams of intercepted cocaine are valued at US$19.2.
