The incident occurred following a controversial refereeing decision during a football match between N’Zérékoré and Labe in N’Zérékoré City, Guinea on Sunday, December 1, 2024.
The match played at the Stade du 3 Avril in Nzérékoré, the country’s second largest city, was hosting the final of a football tournament in honour of the leader of the country’s junta, Mamady Doumbouya, on Sunday afternoon.
According to local reports, thousands of spectators were present at the stadium and children were among the victims but did not give a definitive figure in either case.
Eyewitnesses said a disputed red card was awarded by the referee to the home team of Nzérékoré in the 82nd minute of the match, leading to a penalty.
Supporters of the visiting Labé team invaded the pitch and threw stones, while security personnel reportedly responded by releasing teargas that enveloped the crowd, with many people running over each other in an attempt to escape.
However, the Liberia government in a message to Guinran President, General Mamadi Doumbouya, expressed profound sadness at the passing of the 56 persons.
The Foreign Ministry release said that the Liberian Leader extended deepest condolences to the government and citizens of the Republic of Guinea, especially the bereaved family for the immeasurable loss.
President Boakai said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of national mourning, and we hope that the Almighty Allah grants you and the people of Guinea the strength and resilience needed to navigate through this difficult period.”
