Monrovia – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has ordered the immediate termination of all Ambassadors-at-Large, Special Envoys, and Trade and Investment Representatives, aiming to revamp Liberia’s diplomatic landscape.
The announcement was made by Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah at a press briefing at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism (MICAT). Minister Piah stated that the decision reflects President Boakai’s commitment to reshaping these roles in line with the administration’s governance priorities and foreign policy objectives.
“New appointments will be made based on the country’s governance needs under the current administration, with clearly defined terms of reference and reporting lines,” Minister Piah said. President Boakai emphasized that the restructuring is designed to improve efficiency and accountability within Liberia’s diplomatic missions.
The new appointments will prioritize a strategic and coordinated approach to advancing Liberia’s international relations, trade, and investment efforts. Minister Piah noted that the transition process will be managed respectfully for those affected, stating, “All former appointees will be properly notified and acknowledged for their contributions.”
This initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to realign its foreign policy, with an emphasis on strengthening international partnerships that can boost Liberia’s economic growth and global standing. While no specific timeline for the reappointments was given, the administration aims to fill the positions in line with its updated foreign policy agenda.
In response to recent allegations of corruption within the government, Minister Piah underscored the administration’s commitment to transparency. The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) has begun investigations into reports of bribery within the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation and the Ministry of Transport.
“President Boakai takes these reports seriously and will take appropriate action based on the findings of the LACC and other investigative bodies,” Minister Piah said. Additionally, the administration is investigating alleged fraudulent activities at the Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission related to funds for repatriated Liberians.
President Boakai has voiced his concern over these issues and committed to decisive action following the completion of investigations. Minister Piah reaffirmed the government’s zero-tolerance policy on corruption, encouraging public participation in anti-corruption efforts.
“We welcome whistleblowers and assure the public that verified reports will be thoroughly investigated, with actions taken in accordance with the law,” Piah concluded.
