Liberia has officially qualified for a second Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact, potentially unlocking significant development funding, President Joseph Boakai revealed during his national address on Wednesday, December 18, at Executive Mansion.
The announcement follows a call the President received from Washington, D.C., confirming Liberia’s qualification due to its progress in governance and reform.
According to the MCC, Liberia has qualified for a second Compact due to our outstanding performance in governance and reform.
“This giant achievement will unlock significant resources for our development agenda and help address the binding constraints to growth in our country,” President Boakai stated.
While the President refrained from specifying the exact amount, research indicates that MCC second compacts often range between $350 million and $500 million, depending on a country’s program priorities and capacity for implementation.
If Liberia secures funding in this range, the compact would mark a transformative moment for the nation.
The funds are expected to target critical areas, including infrastructure, energy, and economic transformation, to support Liberia’s sustainable development goals.
President Boakai underscored the collective nature of this achievement.
“This is not just a victory for the government but for all Liberians. It reflects the international community’s confidence in our ability to deliver progress through unity and reform. Let us join hands to celebrate this collective success,” he emphasized.
President Boakai assured citizens that more details on the grant’s focus areas and allocations would be disclosed in the coming weeks.
He encouraged Liberians to remain hopeful and united in pursuing the nation’s growth agenda.
“This is a development that must lift every spirit and restore hope that we are bound to achieve greater feats. Let us join our voices together and say, ‘Congratulations, Liberia!’” he said.
