Montserrado County Representative Bernard Benson, popularly known as DJ Blue, and a staunch supporter of Speaker Fonati Koffa, has defected to the Majority Bloc of the House.

Rep. Benson made a dramatic entrance to the joint chambers, waving the Liberian flag and receiving a standing ovation from his colleagues. Declaring his move as being “for the sake of Liberia,” his crossover marks a significant boost for the Majority Bloc, which is striving to secure a two-thirds majority to unseat the Speaker.

With Benson’s defection, the Majority Bloc now claims 44 members, while Speaker Koffa’s camp has dwindled to 29. Despite this gain, the Majority Bloc still requires five additional members to reach the threshold needed to remove the Speaker.

Benson’s departure is seen as a major setback for Speaker Koffa, who has been relying on the loyalty of his allies to fend off efforts to oust him.
