MONROVIA – The government of Liberia headed by President Joseph N. Boakai has successfully secured a €108 million grant from the European Union (EU) as part of a direct support package aimed at bolstering the country’s national budget, combating gender-based violence, and strengthening public-private partnerships. This substantial financial aid will also address critical issues such as human rights, the rule of law, and women’s empowerment.

The grant, announced by European Union Commissioner Jutta Urpilainen, was disclosed by Minister-Counselor at the Liberian Embassy near Brussels, Senve Darlington Tehmeh. The package represents a significant boost for Liberia’s development agenda, with funds specifically allocated to address pressing societal challenges.

Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti expressed her gratitude to the EU for its continued support to Liberia. She emphasized that the grant was the result of a series of discussions and negotiations involving key government institutions, including the Ministry of Finance, the Foreign Ministry, and representatives of the European Union. “This partnership is a testament to the fruitful dialogue between Liberia and the EU aimed at fostering sustainable development and addressing critical issues such as human rights and gender-based violence,” Nyanti stated.

The grant will also focus on promoting women’s empowerment, a cornerstone of Liberia’s broader gender equity initiatives. Additionally, it will enhance the country’s legal frameworks by reinforcing the rule of law and advancing human rights, key priorities in the government’s reform agenda.

This direct budgetary support comes at a critical time for Liberia, as the nation continues to recover from economic challenges while aiming to improve public services and strengthen democratic institutions. With this support from the EU, Liberia hopes to create more opportunities for public-private partnerships, fostering economic growth and development.

The European Union’s financial backing signals its ongoing commitment to Liberia’s progress and stability, with this latest grant playing a pivotal role in advancing the country’s socio-economic goals.
