Liberia is preparing to welcome a high-level technical delegation of Aquaculture Experts from Egypt’s Lake and Fish Resources Protection and Development Agency.
They are set to arrive in Monrovia on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, the delegation will conduct a thorough assessment of Liberia’s aquaculture sector.
According to Director General Emma Metieh Glassco of the Liberian Fisheries Authority, the Egyptian experts will visit multiple counties including Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, Montserrado, Margibi, Bong, Nimba, and Lofa to evaluate the current state of aquaculture facilities and identify critical needs for sector development.
This visit follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Liberian government and Egypt in 2024, establishing a technical cooperation agreement with the Lake and Fish Resources Protection and Development Agency.
The agreement focuses on fisheries governance, monitoring, control, and surveillance, as well as aquaculture development.
Director General Glassco highlighted that the MoU aims to foster stronger collaboration between Liberia and Egypt, facilitating technical exchanges, institutional capacity building, and trade partnerships between the two nations.
The initiative seeks to promote the sustainable development of Liberia’s aquaculture industry through knowledge sharing and mutual expertise.
During the visit, the Egyptian delegation will tour key aquaculture sites, including Bong Mines Reservoirs, Lake Piso, Gbedin Lowland, and Foyah Lowland, from January 22 to 30, 2025.
The experts will engage in stakeholder consultations with farmers, tertiary institutions, donors, and other value chain actors to gather insights into current practices and potential future interventions.
Additionally, the Egyptian delegation will assess aquaculture management areas identified during the Liberia Sustainable Management of Fisheries Project in 2024.
The aim is to develop a national aquaculture strategy that will guide investment decisions, outline short-, medium-, and long-term objectives, and address the country’s fish deficit in the domestic market.
This partnership represents a significant step forward in enhancing Liberia’s aquaculture sector, with a strong focus on sustainable development and improved fisheries management.
