Kpan Town, Marshall, Margibi County – Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung on Saturday dedicated Joyland Park, a recreational facility owned by Elsie Nyeplu Willie, the daughter of Chief Justice Sie-A-Neh Youh.
Located in Kpan Town, Marshall, Margibi County, the event marked a significant milestone for the family, but it has sparked public debate given its timing amidst a high-stakes political case before the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court is currently presiding over a leadership dispute in the House of Representatives, which pits the Majority Bloc against the Pro-Koffa group.
The Pro-Koffa faction and opposition parties have accused the Executive, led by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and Vice President Koung, of orchestrating the removal of Speaker J. Fonati Koffa.
While the Executive has denied these allegations, VP Koung’s presence at the park dedication has drawn criticism, with many raising concerns about a potential conflict of interest.
Critics argue that the Vice President’s appearance at a family event hosted by the Chief Justice’s daughter could compromise the perceived impartiality of the Court. This is particularly significant as Speaker Koffa and his allies have filed a bill of information with the Supreme Court, seeking clarification of its recent ruling on the House leadership crisis.
In its ruling, the Supreme Court declared that any legislative sitting not conducted in accordance with Liberia’s Constitution is “ultra vires,” a decision that has left room for varying interpretations. Koffa’s camp is urging the Court to provide clear guidance on the legality of the Majority Bloc’s actions, including the controversial session that led to his removal as Speaker.
While supporters of the administration downplay the Vice President’s attendance at the dedication as a personal gesture, critics believe it sends a troubling message during a politically sensitive period. “This raises legitimate questions about impartiality,” said one opposition figure. “How can we expect a fair judgment when the Vice President is visibly aligning himself with the Chief Justice’s family in such a public manner?”
As the political crisis deepens, the public continues to watch closely for the Supreme Court’s next move. The case is widely regarded as a litmus test for Liberia’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining the separation of powers.
