A candidate in the ensuing elections of the Liberia Bar Association (LNBA) is yearning for reform in the administration of the fiscal affairs of the Bar , says the present state of the fiscal affairs of the organization is not accountable and transparent.
The candidate for the position of Secretary General in the the ensuing general elections of the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA), Cllr. Elisha T. J. Forkeyoh, has called for audit of the outgoing leadership to ensure accountabilitability for resources entrusted to them.
The secretarial candidate made a solemn pledge that he will endeavor to prioritize accountability if he is elected Secretary General of the Liberia National Bar Association
Cllr. Forkeyoh is running on the ticket of Cllr. Wiefueh Sayeh. He suggested that the audit should be conducted by an independent firm for the sake of transparency, noting that if his block is elected, they will ensure that those responsible for act of financial impropriety face the full weight of the law. .
A one time senior law clerk during the administration of former Chief Justice Francis Korkpor, Forkeyoh promised, “We are going to prosecute anyone past officials linked to financial mispractices.”
He spoke with journalists in an interview with judicial reporters on last Friday. He said the call for audit is a clear indication that members of the Bar are disappointed with the manner in which the current leadership is handling fund belonging to the Bar.
Cllr. Forkeyoh who is also former President of the National Association of Public Defenders said they are determined to change the traditional financial policy of the Bar, where dues and fees are part directly to people at the bar offices.
According to him, there is no accountability in this traditional policy, when monies are paid in cash to the leadership instead of being paid through the banks , pointing out that his stewardship will be wholly and sincerely committed to changing the current sad financial narrative in the Bar, which necessitated the failure of the Bar to complete its headquarters project for almost almost six years.
He maintained that such financial policy is not transparent and must be changed if members of the Bar are interested to ensuring accountability and transparency, as lawyers.
However, he blamed the current delayed in the completion of the LNBA Headquarters despite thousands of payments being made to the leadership on the lack of fiscal displaine, in utilizing fees collected from members of the association.
Cllr Forkeyoh further promised that he would promote LNBA involvement through a multi-sectoral alliance and with civil society organizations, if elected Secretary General of the LNBA.
“We are respected civil society organizations in the country, but what can we boast of impacting the society,” Forkeyoh said as he questioned the role of past administrations.
Meanwhile, the Bar election committee is expected to release on Monday, the timetable for the November 30 elections.
